Alexandra Stopover

Alexandra Accommodation for Southern Way 1000. The Perfect Stop Between Stage 2 and 3

Alexandra sits at the hinge of the Southern Way 1000, the point where Stage 2 ends and Stage 3 begins. The Mad Hacienda is bikepacking accommodation built for exactly this moment: bike locked up, kit washed, body recovering, before the Roxburgh Gorge takes you south.

Where you’ll find us

Positioned Perfectly Before the Roxburgh Gorge

The Southern Way 1000 runs 910km across seven stages. By the time you reach Alexandra, you've climbed out of the Nevis and Hawksburn backcountry. What comes next, the Roxburgh Gorge, is not the stage to start tired.

STAGE 2 → ALEXANDRA

Garston to Alexandra, 105km via Nevis Road and Hawksburn Road

Remote backcountry gravel with little support along the way. Alexandra is the first proper town and the natural place to stop moving.

214 km

Stage 3 to Dunedin

2 Trails

Roxburgh Gorge + Clutha Gold trails

STAGE 2 → ALEXANDRA

Bike Lockup, Tools, and Laundry On-Site

Frame bags, panniers, and a bike that must survive another 600km. Not something to lean against a fence overnight.
Storage here is locked and undercover, with a workbench and track pump for anything that has started rattling since Queenstown. Full laundry means chamois and base layers are washed and dry before the next stage, and self check-in means arriving late off Stage 2 doesn't mean waiting on anyone.

RECOVERY BEFORE THE GORGE → ALEXANDRA

Deep Recovery Before Your Next Leg

Stage 3 is 214km along the Clutha Mata-au River. It goes better after a real rest, not just a bed.
Reclaim your energy in a private spa pool overlooking the open schist ranges. Follow it with a session in the single-person cedar sauna, then drift off on a premium mattress with fine linens in a tranquil room crafted for complete rest.
